Beyond the loss of life, hazards as well as the impacts of changing socioecological systems also negatively affect people’s health, both in the immediate aftermath and in the long term.
Additionally, disasters can cause adverse health effects by inflicting bodily harm, malnutrition, spreading sickness and disease, and leading to mental health issues from stress or traumatic experiences. Though these effects usually manifest in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, some health issues may not surface until much later, especially chronic illness or mental health impacts.
